40 Years in Sales - Here's what you need to know

Top Salesman Gone Rogue

For 40 years I have been a leading salesperson; selling solutions, managing teams, hitting the phones and hitting targets.

I am going to share the secrets you need to know about the people calling you so you understand what's going on and what to do about it.

Who am I?

You may never know.

But people like me are targeting you every hour of the day.  So how do you deal with them?

The Mission: Speak to the Decision Maker

Whatever it costs.

Always speak to the Decision Maker.  Yes, I know you will have someone who's job it is to divert me, stop the call, push me elsewhere or 'send an email'.  But I am trained, motivated and measured on getting through.

So I will get through.

Whether it is on this call, the next call or the 100th call.  I will get through.  Remember - I have to explain to my management as to why I cannot get through.  I cannot have that.  I have to get through.  It is embarassing and very career limiting to admit that I'm not very good at my job and I can't get past the gatekeeper.

So somehow I will.

In doing so, I don't care how much of your time I waste in doing so.  Your cost is of no concern of me.

I'm coming anyway.

Tell the Truth? Well .. maybe.

I have my tricks to get past your gatekeeper on reception.  I may well tell them that I've known you for years and that you are expecting my call.

Well.  You may be. How would they know whether you are or not.

iPhone Blocking? HA!

If you have call intercept on your iPhone I will get round it.

All I have to say is "Transcript Failed" and you think your phone messed up and you take my call.

Gotcha!

I Will Not Stop.

You are just another name on the list so I will call you.

By the time you've come round on that list again I will not remember so I'll just come after you anyway.

Rejection? Pah!

I am targeted on keeping you on the phone long enough to try and talk you into submission and accept the meeting.

It is my job to not take no for an answer and I have my tricks

But I am On BTPS!

I don't care.

I'm in sales. It's my job to talk to you so I will.

No one in marketing checked that.  I just accessed the database that we had and I'm going to call anyway.

If I have to apologise then I will. But whilst I have you on the phone, can I just ask you about ...

You have done the right thing.  But I am in sales so I'm just going to ignore it as you're on my list.

Advanced Training for Sales People - Get Past the Gatekeeper

All sales people have been trained to find ways to engage you.  Their approach and pitch will have been refined over many years and across thousands of calls.  Their organisation may have spent hundreds of thousands on making them more capable at overcoming your defences.  Whether it is you personally or the receptionist answering the phone.  We will keep talking to you.

How many hours training have you had on dealing with an incoming sales call?

None you say?

Thought not.

All the whilst I talk that is your time you are wasting.  And I suspect that you are too polite to just stop.

Have you ever heard any of these?

The "Peer Authority" Approach

This tells the gatekeeper that this call was requested (whether it was or not)

Sales Rep: "Hi [Gatekeeper Name], it’s [Salesperson's Name]. Is [Decision Maker First Name] in?"

Gatekeeper: "What is this regarding?"

Sales Rep: "It’s [Salesperson's Name] with [Seller's Company]. I'm following up on [Specific Topic/Project Name]—is [Decision Maker First Name] available, or are they in meetings?"

Sales Rep: "We haven't locked in a specific time today—I'm following up on an initiative regarding [Topic]. What's the best time to catch [Decision Maker First Name] between meetings?"

The "Get you onside" approach

This is to get you on side and trick you into giving away your secrets

Sales Rep: "Hi [Gatekeeper Name], hoping you can help me out for a second. I’m trying to figure out who handles [Specific Function, e.g., cloud infrastructure security] over at [Company Name]. Is that [Decision Maker First Name] or someone else on their team?"

Gatekeeper: "That would be [Decision Maker First Name], but they don't take unannounced sales calls."

Sales Rep: "I completely understand—I know [Decision Maker First Name] is extremely busy. I'm putting together brief background info on [Specific Industry Problem] for them. Do they prefer getting brief briefs via email first, or is there a better way to get on their radar?"

The "Timely Intervention" approach

This is to make you feel that something they have aligns exactly to something you are doing and making it a necessity to talk

Sales Rep: "Hi [Gatekeeper Name], [Salesperson's Name] here calling for [Decision Maker First Name]. I noticed [Company Name] recently [Trigger Event: e.g., opened a new logistics hub / posted a hiring notice for X role], and I’m following up on [Specific Solution/Topic]. Could you put me through?"

Gatekeeper: "They do not take cold calls but you can email in"

Sales Rep: "I’d be happy to. What’s the direct email for [Decision Maker First Name]? I want to make sure I mark it attention to [Trigger Event Topic] so it doesn't get lost in their inbox."

BTW: Once I have confirmed the email address then I'm going direct to them on Teams.

What Our Clients Say

“We have gained so much time back, not just from the calls themselves but from the loss of concentration and interruptions we had .”

The Rogues Gallery

Every so often we come across sales people who are so unscrupulous they come to the attention of our standards committee.
These are salespeople who could be repeat offenders at lying, cheating, being rude or anything that makes them stand out as a bad example of poor sales performance.  If they come to our attention, then we are putting them into the rogues gallery.  This will highlight organisations who may have unethical or unprofessional practices who we believe should do better.
It also serves to let people know who not to do business with.  No one wants to work with someone who is not ethical in their practices.

If you are a seller and you recognise these traits and your personnel do these things.  You need to  do better.  You need to train your staff to be professional because we all know that customers who are treated like this will never do business with you. And they will tell their friends about you and they will not do business with you either.

Rogue 1

Was a caller from a very well known telecoms company.  When greeted by SASCIA they were very rude, used profanity at her and slammed the phone down.
In the exit of the call they admitted that they will now use sneak tactics to get round SASCIA.
We know that the SACIA users are too good at what they do and will never let that person get through to a human without having been through SASCIA first.
But to admit that you're going to lie on your next call??

Is that who you want to do business with?

Rogue 2

Lied to the receptionist that the Decision Maker was expecting the call at 10.30.
The Decision Maker had no idea the call was coming in at 10.30.
This was a blatant lie to get the call put through.
Do you want to do business with liars?
(The recipient was furious by the way)

Rogue 3

Rogue 3 sounded like a very lovely northern lady with a nice professional opening to the conversation.  She was selling re-financing for assets and invoice factoring.
When she found out she was talking to an AI agent the message she left was angry and peppered with the worst profanity we have had.  100% Not what we were expecting when the call started.
Do you want to do business with rude, angry people?
